The Dallas Galloway Program                                                                 Our Program

Have your ever thought about running a marathon or half marathon but thought that you could never do it?  Have you tried to train for a long distance event, but found that your training was derailed by injuries?  Have you trained by yourself in the past, but found that getting motivated is difficult?  If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, the Dallas Galloway Program can help you.

The Dallas Galloway program is currently directed by Chris and Stefani Forsythe.  They have been Program Directors since 2007 and active Galloway participants since 2001.  They are assisted by a team of experienced Pace Group Leaders (PGLs) who are very familiar with Jeff Galloway’s training philosophy.  The PGLs help lead the weekly runs, are available to answer questions and to provide support during the training season.

Our weekly training runs are held on Saturdays and start in the parking lot in front of the RunOn! Store located on Mockingbird Lane about ½ mile east of Central Expressway.  Our training runs will incorporate various segments of the White Rock marathon route.  They will take us through the tree-lined neighborhoods of the M Streets and Lakewood as well as around White Rock Lake and the Katy trail.  We also try to attend as many local races as possible that fit within our training schedule.  In an effort to beat the summer heat, we usually start at 5:00 a.m. for runs longer than 10 miles and 6:30 a.m. for shorter runs.  Our training runs are equipped with water along the way.

The Will, The Way, The Walk Break
The Dallas Galloway Training Program has been training marathoners in the Dallas area for over 10 years.  The program is based on Jeff Galloway's experience in training thousands runners and captured in his book "Marathon!". Every runner, no matter what their ability, can begin to train for a marathon by taking regular, frequent walk breaks. The frequency of the walk breaks, and the pace of running, will be calibrated to your current running level. Even elite runners will benefit from this walk break program.

Who Trains with Dallas Galloway?

Runners of all skill levels train with Dallas Galloway.  Although most of our marathoners train for the Dallas White Rock marathon, we provide training schedules for all of the early fall marathons (Chicago, New York Marine Corp, etc.) and extended training programs for those interested in running marathons after the program formally ends in December.  We also hold informal weekly runs around White Rock Lake during the winter (weather permitting) to help stay in shape during the offseason.

In addition to marathon training, we offer training for half marathons using the same training techniques as the marathon training program.

The Power of the Pace Group

Whether you are training for a half or full marathon, you will be assigned to a Pace Group at the beginning of the program based upon your Magic Mile time that will be determined on the first day of the training program.  People with similar Magic Mile times will be grouped together to ensure you are training with people that have similar abilities to you.  That way, you will always have a training team to help keep you motivated and will provide company on those long training runs!  Each Pace Group will be led by 2 PGLs.  Pace Groups range from beginners who walk 1 minute and run 1 minute to a group that can complete a marathon in under 4 hours.

The First Few Weeks
The first few weeks, you run on your own according to the training schedule provided at the beginning of the season.  We will meet Saturday morning for the weekly training run. The weekly long run starts at 3 miles, and increases 1-2 miles per week, until we have achieved a 12 mile run.  Throughout, you will be taking regular, frequent walk breaks, depending on your pace group.

Also, any adjustments to you pace group will be made during these first few weeks. If your initial assigned group pace is too difficult, we will adjust by moving you to the next easier group. If you find yourself pulling ahead of your group, we will move you to the next most difficult group to match your abilities.

After 2-3 weeks, most runners have settled into their groups and are moving towards longer distances in their weekly runs.

After about 4 weeks, we will introduce some speed work into some of the weekly training runs for our veteran marathoners.  Speed work is generally not recommended for first time marathoners.  However, depending on your fitness level, speed work could make sense for you.

Running Long
As the distance of your long runs increases, the frequency of the long runs decreases.  Between 12 and 18 miles, you take your long run every other week.  As the runs move over 18 miles, your long runs are every third week.  Throughout, you continue to run as scheduled during the week, building your ability to go 26.2 miles.  Our last long run will occur about 4 weeks before your targeted marathon and will usually consist of a fully 26.2 miles.

Race Day
Finally, the Marathon arrives. You've trained up to the distance, now you are ready to go.  At White Rock, we will meet as a group at the American Airlines Center.  For other marathons, particularly the big marathons, there are usually other Galloway participants from around the country that we can help you locate.  As in training, you take your walk breaks, recovering in small increments, allowing you to complete the marathon!

Other Events
Throughout the program, we try to provide educational events to assist in your training. These include shoe, sock and hydration clinics, injury prevention and nutrition to name a few that we have provided in the past. Also, we have social events to build group cohesion, and some groups hold individual social events as they desire.
